India - January 18, 2025 A court in the Indian city of Kolkata declared the main accused guilty on Saturday of the rape and murder of a female resident doctor at a local hospital, an act that sparked protests across the country, with allegations regarding the impartiality of the investigation. The accused, Sangam Roy, is a civilian volunteer who frequented the hospital facilities and who, according to the court, violated and murdered a young medical intern last August while she was on a break from a 36-hour shift at the RG Kar University Hospital in Kolkata, in the state of West Bengal.
