The rape case against a man accused of raping a 13 year old girl was postponed in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court to 30 July. The man is a former combatant of Umkhonto we Sizwe ( known as MK, the former armed winged of the African National Congress) as well as a sub council manager for the City of Cape Town.

MK veterans joined the protest outside the court calling for bail to be denied to the accused. According to an opinion piece written by the previous provincial secretary of the ANC in the Western Cape, Faiez Jacobs, the accused was part of an operation on New Year's Even in 1989 which bombed the Mitchells Plain police station which is situated next door to the court in which he now stands accused.

The name of the accused cannot be published at this stage as he has not yet pleaded. He will formally apply for bail on 30 July.
