Batik workers in Indonesia are increasingly rare. Very small wages are the trigger
Batik workers need continuous perseverance and focus. Imagine, they have to sit for 8 hours a day drawing complicated motifs on cloth. thousands of lines and dots. sitting near a stove that is always on to keep the wax liquid. every time they fill the canting (a drawing tool filled with hot liquid wax) the worker must blow so that the lines or dots made are perfect.
while the other hand must hold the cloth that will be drawn with wax. this hand must be resistant to the heat of the wax.
while they are paid only Rp. 37,000 per day, which is equivalent to less than $ 3. This of course makes young people not interested in becoming batik workers.
in this village they are the only batik makers left, only the ones in this video.
all of this worries batik traders around Solo and Yogyakarta. Everything can actually be overcome if batik traders are willing to pay batik workers a reasonable price. One good batik has a price of over Rp. 1 million, equivalent to almost $ 100, and can even be Rp. 5 million or almost $ 400.
