This is the heartwarming moment a fisherman and his wife released a shark ray back into the sea.

Annop Nuamsiri and his partner, Piyachat Pomcharoensuk, accidentally caught a widenose guitarfish in Samut Songkhram, Thailand, on January 23 at 7 am.

Footage shows Annop gently holding the sea creature before carefully releasing it back into the water.

Piyachat said: 'There are so few of them left, and we want to help preserve these sharks so they can reproduce and avoid extinction.'

Widenose guitarfish are critically endangered, as listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, due to overexploitation by coastal fisheries.

In response, various organisations and foundations are working to combat the overhunting of the vulnerable creatures.
