Endangered Malayan Tapir born at zoo in Washington
An endangered Malayan tapir calf was born at a zoo in Washington.
The rare animal was welcomed at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium on February 2, marking only the second tapir birth in the zoo's 120-year history.
The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a tiny, walking watermelon, is healthy and bonding with its mother, Yuna, 10, under the watchful care of wildlife staff. The calf's father, Baku, also 10, remains nearby.
Curator Telena Welsh said: 'We're thrilled to witness this incredible moment and watch the calf grow.'
The calf, estimated to weigh around 20lbs (9kg), is a stark contrast to Yuna's 900lbs (408kg) frame and Baku's 800lbs (363kg).
Footage shows the adorable animal bonding with its mum in their enclosure, clearly enjoying their time together.
It will continue nursing in the Asian Forest Sanctuary before making its public debut later this spring.
Yuna and Baku were paired through the Species Survival Plan, designed to support the genetic diversity of Malayan tapirs in human care.
The calf's sex and name will be announced in the coming weeks.
Malayan tapirs are classified as endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation and human development. Native to Southeast Asia, they play a critical role in maintaining forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds and supporting biodiversity.
