TACOMA, Wash. — Ume, a three-month-old endangered Malayan tapir calf, will make her public debut at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s Asian Forest Sanctuary this Friday, May 16.

Born on Feb. 2 to mother Yuna, Ume has spent her early months nursing, growing, and bonding behind the scenes. Now weighing around 140 pounds, she’s ready to explore her outdoor habitat—complete with water features perfect for a tapir known to use its snout like a snorkel.

“She’s spicy,” said Telena Welsh, curator at the Asian Forest Sanctuary. “Ume is playful, curious, and full of personality—we can’t wait to see how she takes on this new world.”

Ume is just the second tapir born at the zoo in its 120-year history. With fewer than 2,500 Malayan tapirs left in the wild due to deforestation and habitat loss, her birth marks a significant conservation milestone.

Guests are invited to catch their first glimpse of Ume beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Viewing times may vary as mom and calf adjust to their new space.
