Giraffe chews on unbothered companion's tail leaving Chinese zoo goers bemused
On 19th February, visitors at Guangzhou Zoo witnessed a curious and somewhat unusual sight—one giraffe persistently chewing on its companion’s tail, while the other appeared unbothered by the behaviour.
According to animal experts, this behaviour could be a form of stereotypy, often seen in animals kept in monotonous environments with limited stimulation. Stereotypic behaviours include repetitive and purposeless actions such as licking or biting, typically arising when an animal’s natural instincts are restricted.
Experts suggest that zoos can help reduce such behaviours by enriching the environment and providing stimulating activities to better meet the animals' natural needs.
