Homes damaged after fighter jets mistakenly bomb village in South Korea
Homes were damaged after fighter jets mistakenly bombed a village in South Korea.
Korean Air Force planes accidentally dropped the 500lb shells on the residential area during live-fire drills with US forces in Pocheon City, some 43 kilometres (27 miles) north of the capital Seoul, at around 10 am today, March 6.
Footage shows windows shattered and roofs destroyed following the misfire that injured at least 15 people - two of them seriously.
The explosions reportedly damaged eight buildings and a church.
South Korea's Air Force said in a statement: 'Eight MK-82 general-purpose bombs were abnormally released from an Air Force KF-16 aircraft, landing outside the designated firing range.
'We deeply regret the unintended release of the bombs, which resulted in civilian casualties, and wish those injured a swift recovery.'
An accident response committee has been established to investigate the incident, it added.
Local media citing an air force official reported that a 'pilot error' had caused the misdrop. Initial investigations found that the pilot had entered the wrong coordinates for the strike prior to take-off.
The accidental bombing occurred during joint military exercises with the Air Force, Army, and US Forces Korea.
Pocheon is located 25 kilometres (16 miles) south of the heavily militarised border with North Korea.
