A pet greyhound was rescued from a filthy storeroom in Spain.

Police were notified by a concerned neighbour about the animal's condition in an apartment building in the Usera district of Madrid.

Dramatic footage shows the abandoned black canine lying down in a room covered with trash.

Authorities reported that the animal was kept in a narrow space with no light, surrounded by piles of excrement and urine.

Officers identified the dog's owner through its microchip and discovered that the hound had not been vaccinated.

The Municipal Veterinary Emergency Service (SEVEMUR) rushed the pooch to the Madrid City Council's Animal Protection Centre for urgent care and assessment.

The owner could face animal cruelty charges depending on the vet's report. For now, they have fined the owner and taken the dog.
