Tanzania: Tanzanian transport operators embrace shift to Chinese-made buses, trucks
Storyline: Transport operators in Tanzania have embraced the shift to Chinese-made buses and trucks due to their affordability, fuel efficiency, and ease of maintenance. Tanzania's transport sector is experiencing a major shakeup, with Chinese-made buses making their mark in the industry, seemingly pushing out the once-dominant Japanese and European brands. For Omary Namala, manager of Happy Nation Buses, this shift to Chinese buses has been a game changer. Competitive prices and modern designs have not only improved efficiency but also kept passengers happy. Lower costs and flexible payment plans are allowing transport operators to expand their fleets and improve services. For passengers, that means more buses, more routes, and lower fares. While European vehicles have traditionally been favored for their durability, the affordability of Chinese buses allows operators to prioritize lower upfront costs and faster returns on investment, even with potentially shorter lifespans. Transport industry professionals said this trend is fueling local dealerships and assembly partnerships. The transition hasn't been without challenges. Earlier Chinese models experienced issues such as gearbox failures and even fires. However, Gadau noted significant improvements. With ongoing improvements in technology and cost-effectiveness, this shift isn't just reshaping the transport industry, it is also strengthening economic ties between Tanzania and China. SOUNDBITE (Swahili, dubbed in English) Kenny Gadau, managing director, Troni Truck: "You can even pay a deposit of 30 percent only, and the rest can be paid on loan. It depends on the number of buses you need. Some pay as low as 10 percent because the buyer wants 50 or 60 buses. This is a serious businessman, so most of the big buyers are on credit." 9. I think by 2030, they can match European durability. The issue of buses burning was when they first entered the market, back then." 11. Various of trucks assembly factory; 12. Trucks.
