On the evening of 31st March, in Chengdu, Sichuan, Ms Tan unexpectedly came across an elderly woman using a tool to pry up stainless steel tactile paving strips from the pavement.

According to Ms Tan, by the time she noticed, the woman had already removed around 10 to 20 strips. She immediately approached the woman, explained the purpose of tactile paving, and urged her to stop. Upon realising she was being filmed, the woman hurriedly left the scene, carrying the stolen strips with her.

Ms Tan later reported the incident to the police. Upon receiving the report, the Chengdu Public Security Bureau quickly launched an investigation.

Following an inquiry, the police confirmed the woman’s illegal actions. The suspect, a 62-year-old woman surnamed Zhao, had removed the stainless steel strips from the tactile paving along Beixing Avenue in Xindu District at around 8pm on 31st March, intending to sell them as scrap metal.

In accordance with relevant laws and regulations, the Chengdu Public Security Bureau has placed Zhao under criminal detention. Meanwhile, authorities have swiftly undertaken repair work to restore the damaged tactile paving.
