This is the shocking moment a cop is taken on a white-knuckle ride as he clings to the bonnet of a suspect's car in a bid to stop him from escaping.

The driver allegedly refused to stop for police after being involved in a crash with another vehicle on March 30.

As he roared past a checkpoint in Dylym, Dagestan, Russia, one officer leapt onto the bonnet to try to force him to stop.

Passerby footage shows the officer being driven at speed, gripping the air vents as he desperately tries to keep his feet off the road rushing beneath him. The officer is only saved when a police van blocks the road, forcing the driver to halt.

As the footage ends, a group of officers are seen kicking and stomping the driver after pulling him from the vehicle.

Regional police chief Alexander Bastrykin later told local media that the suspect is in custody and facing several charges, including endangering the life of an officer.
