A British tourist who sparked fears for his wellbeing after disappearing for a month in Thailand has been found safe in a dingy hostel.

Daniel Davies, 26, from Llanelli, Wales, had been staying at the Hangover Hostel in Bangkok before he was last seen on the island of Koh Phi Phi.

His desperate family say they have not heard anything from Daniel since March 13, which is 'highly out of character'.

They filed a missing person's report with Dyfed-Powys Police, but officers in Southeast Asia were yet to locate him.

However, following international attention yesterday, police were mobilised and checked the island, before being sent to the nearby mainland in Krabi province.

Daniel was woken up from his bunk bed at The Guest Hotel and Hostel, where a police officer told him his family were 'a little bit worried'.

The backpacker shrugged off the concerns and said he was fine and had 'no problem' staying in the backpacker destination, renowned for its bars and parties.

He then put on his clothes before walking away down the street, with it unclear if he had been in contact with his relatives.

Police Colonel Soratat Iamlauor said: 'Officers travelled to investigate and found the tourist staying at the hotel alone.

'However, he initially refused to give any information to officers. When we asked tourists at the same hotel who had spoken to the British man, it was learned that he was having a problem with his family.

'He told his friends that he did not want to go home. No one knows what the problem was.'

Police said they would inform the British Embassy in Bangkok to coordinate with Daniel's relatives.

Despite its tropical appeal, Thailand has become one of the most dangerous destinations for tourists, with dozens dying or being seriously injured every month.
