India tests lasers capable of shooting down aircraft, missiles and drones
India tested lasers reportedly capable of shooting down aircraft, missiles, and drones.
Authorities demonstrated a 30-kilowatt laser-based weapons system known as 'Shastra Shakti,' which is said to use radar to locate a target and destroy it at the speed of light.
The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) showcased the capabilities of its Directed-Energy Weapons system (DEWs) in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh.
Footage shows the laser device detecting potential targets using radar.
Reports indicated that the production and deployment of the system on various military platforms are now ready.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, chairman of the DRDO, said that only China, Russia, and the United States have demonstrated similar capabilities.
He added: 'We are proud to be among the few nations in the world showcasing this advanced system, with Israel also making strides in similar capabilities.'
Samir revealed that DRDO is developing additional high-energy systems, including exploring alternative high-energy technologies such as electromagnetic pulses and high-energy microwaves.
The test was held at the National Open Air Range, with attendance from military experts, industry officials, and engineers on Sunday, April 13.
