Healthy elephant calf born at Zurich Zoo in Switzerland
A healthy elephant calf was born at Zurich Zoo in Switzerland, marking the latest addition to the zoo's jumbo family.
Nineteen-year-old Farha gave birth without complications to a male calf on Saturday, April 19.
The delivery took place at 2:22 am at the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park. The father is a 20-year-old bull named Thai.
The calf stood and drank shortly after birth, which is a positive sign. Farha immediately began caring for her newborn.
Zoo Director Severin Dressen said the team is happy but cautious.
Severin added: 'The first weeks of a calf's life are always the most delicate — even if the calf currently appears healthy and fit.'
This is the first successful elephant birth at Zurich Zoo in five years. If all continues to go well, the group, which includes Farha and another female, Panang, will grow by one more member.
Farha gave birth separately from Panang to avoid potential risks. The two jumbos maintained visual and trunk contact throughout the birth.
Asian elephants have a gestation period of nearly two years. Successful births are rare, making this event especially significant.
Zurich Zoo has supported conservation work in Thailand's Kaeng Krachan National Park since 2009, helping protect the remaining wild elephant populations.
Asian elephants are classified as endangered, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 left in the wild.
