At the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC), every animal has a story—and none more heartwarming than Hugo's. Rescued as a cub from Hugo Mountain with her face and paws riddled with porcupine quills, she arrived orphaned and injured. With no mother in sight, she was given a second chance at life by the dedicated staff at AWCC, a nonprofit sanctuary committed to wildlife preservation through education, research, and compassionate care.

Now 24 years old, Hugo is the oldest bear at the sanctuary and the only grizzly among a trio of coastal brown bears she calls family. Despite her age, Hugo is known for her playful spirit—tossing snowballs, exploring with sticks, or swimming in the pond. She has become a beloved ambassador for her species, showing visitors the resilience and beauty of Alaska’s wildlife.

Thanks to AWCC’s tireless mission, animals like Hugo not only survive—they thrive. By sharing her journey, the center continues to inspire conservation efforts and connect people to the incredible creatures of the North.
