TACOMA, Wash. — Ume, a three-month-old Malayan tapir calf at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, was recently captured on video taking her first taste of curly willow, a plant often used for animal enrichment.

The footage, shared by the zoo, shows Ume curiously exploring and nibbling the leafy treat under the care of her keepers. Keepers say introducing new tastes and textures helps support healthy development and behavior in young animals.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, located on 29 acres in Tacoma’s Point Defiance Park, is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. It is home to more than 9,000 animals representing 367 species and is owned and operated by Metro Parks Tacoma.

Ume continues to grow under the watchful eye of staff as part of the zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation and animal care.
