KAUA‘I, Hawaii — A Kaua‘i police officer was honored for his bravery after carrying a dehydrated hiker to safety along the Kalalau Trail last month.

On July 22, around 7 p.m., Officer Matthew VanAken responded to a missing hiker report. Nearly a mile into the trail, he found the hiker suffering from severe muscle cramping and dehydration.

VanAken used a fireman’s carry technique to bring the hiker out of the rugged terrain, staying calm and reassuring until they reached medical personnel.

The Kaua‘i Police Commission awarded him the Police Commendation Medal on Aug. 22 for his exceptional response and dedication to community safety.
