Woman "scared for her life" as ex who gouged her eyes out is moved to open prison
A woman who was left blind when her ex gouged her eyes out says she's "scared for her life" after he his recent move to an open prison. "
Tina Nash, 44, is living in fear after ex-partner, Shane Jenkin, 46, was moved to a category D open prison in February this year - often used to prepare prisoners for release.
Tina claims she's been informed Jenkin will be free to walk the streets, find employment and visit family as early as this summer and has heard from people on his landing "the first thing he'll do is come for me"."
The thug held Tina hostage, strangled her, broke her nose and gouged her eyes out using his fingers - leaving her blind - in a horrific 12-hour attack which the court heard was one of the worst cases of domestic abuse the UK had ever seen.
Jenkin was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of six years in May 2012 at Truro Crown Court - after admitting causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Worried Tina is now raising money to secure her home in Penzance, Cornwall, after the news of Jenkin's move.
She claims she is "waiting for the Ministry of Justice to contact me" and hopes his release can be "put back". "
Mum-of-two Tina said: "I know him and I know he's not scared of the police, he's not scared of anything."
"I am really scared, I can't believe this is happening to me."
"I am speaking out and I know he'll hate me for it, but I'm doing it."
"For me it feels like he's gone from a category A to a Category D in two years and I don't know how that's happened. "
"I was promised that this man would not be able to hurt anyone else again."
"This man shouldn't be let out, I was told he'd be a geriatric or dying from terminal illness by the time he was released."
"He's coming out in his prime, he's going to be in his mid-forties by the time he's out."
"He can still damage a lot of people."
"He doesn't care, man or woman, he's just psychotic." "
Tina first met Shane in 2009 at one of her friend's birthdays and the pair were together for two years before the brutal attack in April 2011 - during which Tina was left with injuries which resulted in her blindness.
She said: "It's completely ruined my life. "
"I used to be a really outgoing, bubbly girl. "
"My kids are my life, I enjoyed getting up in the mornings and doing their school runs. "
"I was a very independent girl, I'd lived on my own since I was 16. "
"For this to happen to me it's completely stripped away who I am."
Tina is now fundraising to secure her home – with alarm systems, cameras and shutters for her windows and doors - and has so far raised over £37k out of her £50k target.
She said: "I'm so grateful for everyone that's helped me. "
"I don't want to move house because I've got used to this house now."
"If I did move house I'd be bashing into things."
"I'm already flagged to the police so if anything happens, they have to be here within three minutes." "
She is also trying to raise enough to buy a pair of smart glasses that, through a camera and speaker, will enable her to read.
Alongside her fundraising, Tina has also launched a petition to stop Jenkin from being released that has had over 25,000 signatures.
She is seeking legal advice and will find out at the next parole hearing Jenkin's fate.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "This was a horrific crime and our thoughts remain with Ms Nash."
"All prisoners, including those serving life sentences, must pass a robust risk assessment before any move to open conditions and we do not hesitate to move them back to closed prisons if they break the rules."
They shared how the independent Parole Board recommended Jenkin be moved to open conditions - after it conducted a thorough risk assessment.
