Phoenix, United States - May 09, 2025 05/08/2025 11:30 pm GMT-0700 PEORIA, Ariz. – Per AZ DPS, troopers responded to reports of a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Loop 101 near Glendale Avenue at approximately 11:30 p.m. ADOT camera operators spotted a dark in color Toyota sedan traveling against traffic in the HOV lane at highway speeds. The vehicle continued northbound in the southbound lanes for several miles. Multiple state troopers and officers from the Peoria Police Department scrambled in an attempt to intercept the driver. A short time later, ADOT camera operators witnessed the wrong-way vehicle strike a black sedan near the Loop 101 off-ramp for Thunderbird Road. The wrong-way vehicle lost control and veered onto the dirt shoulder, stopping several hundred feet north of the collision scene. Troopers and Peoria police officers arrived moments after the collision and quickly surrounded the wrong-way vehicle. A single unidentified driver was located behind the wheel. Upon contact with troopers, the suspect was non-compliant and promptly taken into custody. Peoria Fire Medical crews responded to the scene and evaluated the involved occupants. The unidentified suspect and all occupants from the collision refused hospitalization. DPS troopers are investigating the incident, and impairment is suspected. The southbound Loop 101 off-ramp for Thunderbird Road was briefly shut down while troopers conducted their investigation.
