Terrifying scene as extreme rainstorm strikes Chinese airport seeing terminal roof leak
Around 8 p.m. on May 8, Xi’an in Shaanxi Province was hit by a rare and intense short-term convective weather event, as hail and a violent rainstorm suddenly struck Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.
The concentrated impact of the hail clogged drainage troughs on the roof of areas including the T5 terminal’s North Pier, causing rainwater to overflow and leak into the terminal. This led to brief flooding in some boarding gate areas and water dripping from parts of the ceiling in passenger waiting zones.
The airport responded by activating the rooftop snow-melting electric heating system to continuously heat the drainage troughs for 20 minutes, while deploying a 20-person emergency team to manually remove ice from the roof, clearing over 5 tons of hail and ice. By around 9 p.m., the affected areas were safely restored with no injuries or significant property damage reported.
The extreme weather forced a temporary suspension of flight operations at the airport, resulting in 11 flight diversions, 25 delays, 7 cancellations, and travel disruptions for over 3,000 passengers.
