A violent thunderstorm tore down the roof of a newly built airport terminal in Bangkok on Monday evening.

Terrified passengers watched as the structure buckled then collapsed under the pressure of the tropical downpour at the Don Mueang International Airport (DMK).

Video taken in the terminal in Bangkok on April 18 shows heavy rain falling through the huge gap of the collapsed structure, which gave way from the weight of the rainwater gathering on top. There were also flash floods on surrounding roads.

The building, which was built near the airport's Terminal 1, was completed last year to service tour groups, but remains unused due to the pandemic. No one was reported injured as the terminal was unoccupied at the time of the collapse.

Airport management has launched an investigation into the incident. Saksayam Chidchob, Thailand's Transport Minister, has also ordered Airports of Thailand to probe the cause of the collapse.

Thailand's Meteorological Department last Friday warned of thunderstorms affecting northeastern Thailand over the weekend and on Monday due to a moderate high-pressure area over China.

They said: 'Outbreaks of summer storms are forecast followed by thunderstorms, gusty wind and hail. All transport systems should proceed with caution during the storms, and farmers should make preparations to prevent crop damage.'
