This is the dramatic moment a lava fountain burst from the Kanlaon Volcano during an explosive eruption in the Philippines.

Video shows the geyser of molten material shooting up from the volcano on Negros Island at 3 am local time on May 13.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said the 'pyroclastic density currents' flowed down the slope during the five-minute eruption.

The agency said: 'Large ballistic fragments were also observed to have been thrown around the crater within a few hundred meters and caused burning of vegetation near the volcano summit.'

A 14,800ft (4,500m) ash plume was also recorded.

Kanlaon, which straddles Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces on Negros Island, is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the country.

It is currently under Alert Level 3, indicating 'increased chances for sudden and even stronger explosive eruptions'. The volcano's last explosive eruption was on December 9.

The Philippines, an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
