A large amber-coloured diamond weighing 468.30 carats (93.66 grams) has been discovered in Russia.

ALROSA, the state-owned diamond mining company, said it is the largest gem-quality diamond ever found in the country.

The discovery was announced on May 8.

The diamond, measuring 56 x 54 x 22 millimetres (2.20 x 2.13 x 0.87 inches), was extracted from ALROSA's deposits in the Arctic region of Yakutia.

ALROSA CEO Pavel Marinychev noted the timing of the discovery, which coincides with the anniversary of the end of World War II, referred to in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.

Pavel said: 'It is symbolic that it was found in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.

'Therefore, we decided to name it in honour of such a significant event for our entire country.'

It was named '80 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War'.

Earlier in April, ALROSA presented the 'New Sun', the largest cut diamond in Russian history, weighing over 100 carats.

The cutting process took more than two years, and the golden-honey-coloured treasure, mined from Arctic deposits, is set to be auctioned soon.
