MINNEAPOLIS — Ahead of his concert Tuesday night, musician Jelly Roll made a surprise visit to the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center, delivering a powerful message of hope and transformation to detainees and staff.

Jelly Roll, who spent years in and out of jail during his youth, spoke about how he earned his GED while incarcerated and committed to becoming the father he never had.

“When I was 13 years old I caught my first criminal charge…I would spend the next thirteen years in and out of the system,” he said, reflecting on his journey from incarceration to fatherhood and fame.

“Jail time shouldn’t be wasted time. Jelly Roll is a great example of how jail programs can change lives,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt, who presented the artist with a commemorative key to the jail.

The visit was made possible with support from law enforcement partners, including Sheriff Hall of Davidson County and Sheriff Swanson of Genesee County.
