This unique open-air gallery features portraits of revered Sufi leaders alongside powerful quotations from revolutionary figures, creating a visual dialogue between faith and freedom. The artistic tradition traces its roots to the 1980s "set-setal" community clean-up movement, which gradually transformed into a platform for public expression. Today, the neighborhood's narrow alleyways display striking murals of Sheikh Ahmadu Bamba and other Sufi saints sharing walls with anti-colonial icons like Burkina Faso's Thomas Sankara and Congo's Patrice Lumumba. Among the most poignant artworks is Sankara's 1984 United Nations address: "We have sworn never to accept injustice on this land again." Nearby, Malcolm X's warning — "Only a fool would let his enemy teach his children" — appears alongside Lumumba's call to action: "You will achieve nothing without struggle." The murals also honor local history, including a depiction of 19th century resistance leader El Hadj Omar Tall, whose missing sword symbolizes the fight against French colonialism. Recognized by Time Out magazine as one of the world's coolest neighborhoods in 2021, Ngor has become both a cultural landmark and tourist attraction. Its pastel-colored houses and oceanfront setting provide the perfect backdrop for what has essentially become a walking museum of African identity and resilience.
