-RAMALLAH, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - JUNE 9, 2025: A Palestinian man in the West Bank city of Ramallah has surrounded his home with electrified barbed wire and installed an iron gate to protect his family from repeated assaults by illegal Israeli settlers. Abdullatif Abu Aliyah, the homeowner, said he spent nearly $3,000 on the security measures. "I built this with effort and struggle to provide protection from settlers both during the day and night," he explained. Abu Aliyah and his family face daily threats and intimidation on their own land. He described how even stepping a few meters outside his yard provokes Israeli settlers and soldiers to confront him, shouting that he is "not wanted" and demanding he leave. "But I said it’s impossible. I will not leave. I’m like Umm Mohammad. No matter what happens, I won’t leave this house or move even a little," Abu Aliyah said, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to his home. His resolve reflects the broader struggle of Palestinians living under occupation, as they face growing settler violence and shrinking space for safe existence. "Every aspect of my life is controlled by occupation forces," Abu Aliyah stated. "So I’m just waiting to see whether the world will listen, whether they will accept this reality or continue to ignore it." Since the start of Israel’s assault on Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, 977 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. In a landmark opinion last July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
