Storyline: The Third China Marine Equipment Expo concluded on Sunday in Fuzhou, east China's Fujian Province, showcasing the maritime industry's latest advances in intelligent and eco-friendly technologies. A key focus of the four-day event was on unmanned systems and intelligent technologies, including bionic underwater robots designed to operate in complex environments. Among the exhibits was a catfish-shaped robot equipped with fin-like propulsion on both sides of its body, allowing it to move at high speeds, hover underwater, and turn in place, all with minimal disturbance to its surroundings. "This vessel is primarily designed for navigating through complex waterways such as those with seabed silt and around islands and reefs. Conventional vessels with vertical thrusters tend to stir up significant sediment, which can interfere with detection equipment like cameras. Our vessel, however, achieves almost zero disturbance," explained Wang Chonglei, a lecturer at Harbin Engineering University. Green shipping solutions also featured prominently, with exhibits ranging from methanol-fueled engines to all-electric propulsion systems. Fujian's first high-power charging facility for electric ships was also open for public demonstration. The expo also highlighted satellite and wireless communication systems designed to establish offshore networks for aquaculture, wind farms, and emergency rescue operations. One exhibitor showcased self-organizing communication equipment capable of extending network coverage across several square kilometers at sea. "By installing our self-organizing communication equipment and portable base stations from three major carriers on vessels, we can extend network coverage to provide command and control signals for AI-equipped devices, expanding the operational range to five or six square kilometers. During maritime emergency rescue operations, our equipment can also be deployed on drones to quickly reach designated rescue areas and establish temporary networks within a short time," said Yu Gang, a staff member at one of the participating companies.
