Nigerian senator locks airport door after he misses flight
An angry Nigerian senator allegedly locked an airport door after missing his flight.
Adams Oshiomhole, former Governor of Edo State, arrived at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 1 reportedly around 6:10 am for Air Peace Flight P47120, scheduled to depart Lagos for Abuja at 6:30 am on Wednesday, June 11.
However, the airline said the boarding process had already closed, and the flight departed on time.
Air Peace claimed that upon being informed he had missed the flight, Oshiomhole became agitated and barricaded the terminal entrance, preventing other passengers from accessing the departure hall.
The airline said in a statement: 'Upon being informed of the missed flight, the politician resorted to violence, physically assaulting our staff and forcefully barricading the terminal's entrance.
'He went as far as sealing the entry gate and manning the access point, effectively obstructing other passengers from gaining entry into the terminal.'
The airline reported that operations were disrupted, prompting a contingency plan to redirect passengers through an alternate terminal.
Air Peace condemned the senator's behaviour, stating: 'Air Peace continues to stand for discipline, integrity, and respect for due process. No individual, no matter how influential, is above these values.'
In response, Oshiomhole described the incident as part of a pattern of troubling travel experiences, including delays and alleged discriminatory treatment at the airport.
He said: 'I arrived at the airport 40 minutes ahead. My luggage was already checked in. But they told me they had stopped issuing boarding passes. Meanwhile, I saw others arriving after me who were allowed to board.
'I got there at about five minutes past six. They told me the counter was closed. I told them, 'No, I've already checked in.' I showed them the evidence of my online check-in. Even before then, they had asked if I had checked in, and I told them yes, and that I had no luggage. They looked at it but still said the gate had been closed.'
He also said he refused special treatment offered by security personnel and airline staff, which Air Peace denied.
In Nigeria, check-in for domestic flights typically closes 45 minutes before departure, with boarding ending 15–20 minutes prior. For international flights, check-in may close 90 minutes before takeoff.
Air Peace is a privately owned Nigerian airline and one of the largest carriers in West Africa. It operates both domestic and international flights and has a growing network that includes destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
