NEWPORT, N.C. — A dramatic lightning strike was caught on camera at Newport Community Park on June 16, highlighting the real and sudden danger of severe weather.

The Newport Fire Department released the footage as a timely reminder ahead of Lightning Safety Awareness Week, which runs June 22–28. The video underscores the importance of taking shelter as soon as thunder is heard.

Officials noted that lightning strikes the U.S. about 25 million times a year, causing hundreds of injuries and around 20 fatalities annually. Safety tips include seeking shelter indoors or in a hard-topped vehicle, avoiding open spaces and tall objects, staying away from water and metal, and waiting 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.

The department urges everyone to stay alert during storms and take lightning threats seriously.
