This is the dramatic moment helicopters dumped water on the Ranch Place Fire that threatened homes in California.

Firefighters and aerial crews sprang into action to extinguish the vegetation fire that broke out east of San Jose.

Footage shows aircrafts dropping water over a field as thick smoke billows across the Alum Rock area on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 17.

Local media reported that the blaze began near Ranch Place and Old Piedmont Road, scorching nearly 100 acres.

Cal Fire and the San Jose Fire Department deployed 170 personnel, 41 engines, two helicopters, and five airtankers to battle the flames.

Evacuation orders were issued for neighbourhoods along Sierra Road as the fire came within 20 feet of some homes.

By the evening, the blaze was reportedly 75 per cent contained, allowing authorities to downgrade evacuation orders to warnings.

On June 18, officials confirmed that the fire had been fully extinguished, with no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Resident John Garcia expressed his gratitude for the firefighters' efforts, noting that while his mailbox was damaged by a firetruck, his home was spared.

He said: 'I'm lucky. I have my life. I have my house safe.'

Authorities continue to urge residents to maintain defensible space around their properties, especially as more warm weather is expected.
