Storyline: Water sports boom drives equipment sales in China [Voice_over] From kayaks to surfboards, Chinese sports equipment manufacturers are ramping up production as more families dive into water sports this summer. A kayak producer in east China's Zhejiang Province says they've introduced kid-friendly models this year, which are lighter and easier to handle. [Sound_bite] Li Dehong, manager, kayak factory: "Our blow-molded kayaks are 30 percent lighter than rotational moulding kayaks, with the price also down by 30 percent. We plan to sell about 80,000 units this year, a 50 percent increase from last year." [Voice_over] A paddle maker in the province meanwhile, says sales have increased by 20 percent this year with paddles sporting trendy designs the most popular among young adventurers. [Sound_bite] Wang Kang, manager, sporting goods company: "This year's sales are up 20 percent compared with last year, with the total output reaching 200,000 to 300,000 pieces. The designs of paddles used to be very plain, but now with vibrant patterns and colors, they look much more stylish and appeal to younger consumers." [Voice_over] Chinese electric surfboard makers are also riding a wave of strong sales this summer and say they expect the momentum to continue. [Sound_bite] Chen Yuanzhang, manager, electric surfboard company: "We produced about 2,000 surfboards last year, but this year, out total output is expected to reach 3,000, with a 50 percent increase. We predicted that the water sports products are on an upward trend, with an annual growth rate of over 30 percent." [Voice_over] Data from China's General Administration of Sports shows that the country is home to more than one million surfing and paddle board enthusiasts.
