SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zou Yunhan, deputy director, Macroeconomic Research Office, State Information Center, National Development and Reform Commission (starting with shot 37, ending with shots 39-41): "This year's New Year holiday saw a stronger trend of immersive scenario innovation, with experiential consumption, especially ritual-driven spending, becoming a new growth driver. Behind the holiday consumption boom is the demand-led upgrading of industrial chains, and an accelerated comprehensive supply-side transition from products to services and from fragmented operations to integrated collaboration. This provides a more solid foundation for sustained consumer market prosperity and expanded domestic demand." Changxing County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, east China - Jan 1-3, 2025 39. Various of people at activities celebrating New Year Wuhu City, Anhui Province, east China - Jan 1-3, 2025 41. Aerial shot of crowd of visitors in scenic area Storyline China saw a consumption boom during the three-day New Year holiday that ended Saturday, with rising demands driving the emergence of new consumption scenarios and business forms, which demonstrated sustained market vitality. During the holiday from January 1 to 3, China's catering consumption rose by 2.8 percent year on year, and the average daily foot traffic and turnover at 78 key pedestrian streets and commercial districts nationwide increased by 5.9 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, compared with the 2025 New Year holiday, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce. Major commercial districts across China rolled out a wide range of new offerings in the holiday, attracting consumers eager for fresh experiences. In Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, the city's first park complex saw the single-day foot traffic exceeding 120,000 visitors on New Year's Day. In Shenzhen City of south China's Guangdong Province, the newly opened shopping street at the Shenzhen Bay Culture Square attracted large crowds, featuring nearly 40 new shops and flagship stores, alongside immersive experiences in intangible cultural heritage handicrafts, creative cuisine, and trendy lifestyle brands all under one roof. China also saw accelerated emergence of new consumption scenarios, broadening opportunities for service-related spending during the holiday. In Yongzhou City of central China's Hunan Province, recently crowned champion in a provincial football tournament, players and fans gathered for themed holiday events, immersing themselves in the excitement of sports. In the ancient alleyways of Kuqa City in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local folk culture captivated throngs of tourists with immersive holiday experiences. Meanwhile, the trend of new demand-led supply in the consumption market has been particularly pronounced from the outset of the new year, with smarter and greener products favored by consumers during the holiday. The sales of smart health and wearable devices rose by more than 20 percent and 15 percent, respectively, while top energy-efficient home appliances also witnessed a double-digit sales growth during the holiday, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Riding the wave of enthusiasm for winter sports, Chongli, a popular skiing destination in north China's Hebei Province, has introduced smart gear rentals and real-time slope monitoring systems to improve skiers' experiences. Robots and artificial intelligence have also been deeply applied to consumption scenarios. In Suzhou City of east China's Jiangsu Province, robots have been used to assist in selling more than 60 types of beverages, snacks, and cultural creative products, ensuring orderly operations during peak hours. In Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, robot dogs are serving as high-tech sled dogs for recreation. Specially engineered for extreme cold and equipped with four-wheel-drive systems, they effortlessly pull sleds on the frozen surface of the Songhua River surface, wowing visitors with cutting-edge winter experiences. "This year's New Year holiday saw a stronger trend of immersive scenario innovation, with experiential consumption, especially ritual-driven spending, becoming a new growth driver. Behind the holiday consumption boom is the demand-led upgrading of industrial chains, and an accelerated comprehensive supply-side transition from products to services and from fragmented operations to integrated collaboration. This provides a more solid foundation for sustained consumer market prosperity and expanded domestic demand," said Zou Yunhan, deputy director of the Macroeconomic Research Department at the National Development and Reform Commission's State Information Center.
