Alaska earthquake triggers tsunami warning sirens
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake triggered tsunami warning sirens in Alaska.
Footage shows the alarms blaring across a car park in Kodiak as motorists drove their vehicles to higher ground on the island on Wednesday, July 16.
Tourist Josiah Parris said: 'Had a surprise during the trip. Alert was given while a couple of us were at a coffee shop of a tsunami hit not far from us. While the group was at a grocery store in Kodiak, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake was announced to hit 15 miles out and sirens went on.'
The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck southeast of Sand Point on Popof Island at 12:37 pm local time. It was recorded at a depth of 12.5 miles (20.1 kilometres).
Austin Holland of the Alaska Earthquake Center said: 'This area has been active over the past several years with a series of earthquakes of magnitude 7 or greater. This event, located 55 miles (89 km) south of Sand Point, Alaska, was felt over a broad region, extending as far as Anchorage and Juneau, where reported shaking was light. Ground shaking was the strongest in Sand Point, where one resident reported objects flying out of the pantry and off of shelves.
'In Homer, it was described as mild rolling, with lamps and plants swaying. We have not received reports of significant damage in the communities nearest to the epicenter.'
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration raised a tsunami warning for majority of the Alaskan but it was later lifted at 2:43 pm.
