Spain: Guardia Civil Executes Dramatic Mountain Rescues In Río Verde And Poqueira Ravine
Spain - July 16, 2025 Otívar and Sierra Nevada, Spain – On July 16, 2025, the Guardia Civil carried out two complex mountain rescues involving serious falls in difficult terrain. The first rescue occurred just before noon in Río Verde ravine, Otívar. A 42-year-old woman suffered a fall, sustaining a severe shoulder injury that prevented her from walking. Due to the challenging access, the Guardia Civil’s aerial unit used a helicopter crane to reach and evacuate her to the Hospital del Parque Tecnológico de la Salud (PTS). Later that afternoon at 5:09 p.m., another rescue unfolded in the Poqueira ravine, Sierra Nevada. A 33-year-old man fell vertically near the confluence of the Poqueira and Trevélez rivers, apparently fracturing his ankle. The location’s extreme difficulty required coordinated efforts between the mountain specialists (GREIM) and the aerial unit. The narrow ravine and risk of falling rocks complicated the operation. Helicopter pilots maintained a precarious hover while officers descended by crane. After stabilizing the victim’s ankle onsite, they lifted him to the helicopter and transported him to the PTS hospital. Both rescues were part of the intensified summer operation to respond to increased outdoor activity. The missions highlight the Guardia Civil’s professionalism and swift capability in high-risk mountain emergencies.
