Piñon Hills, United States - July 21, 2025 On July 21, 2025, San Bernardino County Fire’s Large Animal Rescue Team worked with local veterinarians to rescue a 38-year-old horse that had been down for over eight hours. The horse’s owner tried all day to help her stand but could not, then called for emergency help. While on the way, fire crews contacted Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services, who were nearby and responded immediately. After a full assessment, the veterinarian recommended lifting the horse to give her a chance at recovery. Teams from Rescue 305, Large Animal Rescue 305, and Medic Engine 14 used a glide board and rope system to position the horse. They set up a large animal tripod and Becker Sling, then used an 8:1 rope mechanical advantage to lift the horse safely to her feet. The horse stayed in the harness briefly to restore circulation before being released. She stood and walked on her own, showing signs of recovery, including good hydration, while closely monitored by the vet and technician. The owner was deeply thankful to see her horse back on its feet. This rescue highlights strong teamwork between San Bernardino County Fire and Advanced Equine and Small Ruminant Veterinary Services.
