China: Heavy rain triggers floods, evacuations in Gansu Province
Torrential rain has caused severe flooding and mudslides in northwest China's Gansu Province since Thursday afternoon, forcing evacuations and prompting large-scale rescue operations. In Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, authorities relocated 32 residents overnight as rising floodwaters threatened homes. Dongxiang County saw roads destroyed by mudslides, with police working to rescue trapped residents. The region remains under heavy rainfall, with Kangle and Hezheng counties issuing red alerts for heavy rain - China's most severe weather warning, as some areas are expected to receive over 100 mm of accumulated rainfall by Friday evening. The storm system also battered Yuzhong County in Lanzhou, where a sudden downpour dumped 170 mm of rain on Xinglong Mountain area by 02:00 Friday. The deluge triggered flash floods that buried sections of Provincial Highway 104 under silt, cutting off access to four villages and trapping more than 4,000 residents. Emergency crews worked through the night to clear debris and reach stranded residents. Power and communication lines were knocked out across the affected areas, where repair teams are working against time to restore services.
