China: Smart technologies accelerate immigration clearance in China
[Voiceover] Traveling to or from east China's Zhejiang Province has gotten remarkably simpler thanks to the adoption of smart technologies like self-service kiosks and humanoid robots. At the border inspection area of the Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, humanoid robots roam the terminal offering advice on various policies. [Soundbite] Wu Liang, plice officer, Hangzhou Border Inspection: "We will continuously upgrade the capabilities of the robots so they can handle various complex inspections and respond rapidly to emergencies." [Voiceover] In January, special self-serve kiosks were introduced that allow travelers to fill out the necessary arrival paperwork, called a foreign entry card, by scanning a QR code. Officials say the program, which supports seven languages, has been used by more than 86,000 travelers. [Soundbite] Liu Jiani, police officer, Hangzhou Border Inspection: "In the first half of 2025, we handled over 2.55 million border crossings, a 12.3 percent year-on-year increase. Of those crossings, foreign entries accounted for 206,000, up 33.5 percent year on year." [Voiceover] China's inbound foreign tourism has remained steady in the first two quarters of the year thanks in large part to the country's visa free travel program. Data shows more than 13 million foreigners used the program in H1 this year, accounting for about 71 percent of total foreign entries. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
