Six Chinese and Vietnamese tourists 'caught with drugs' at nightclub in Bangkok
Six Chinese and Vietnamese tourists were allegedly caught with drugs at a bustling nightclub in Bangkok.
The holidaymakers were arrested while partying at the crowded 577Club in the capital's Huai Khwang district on August 16.
Dozens of police raided the establishment following a tip-off that the venue, popular among Chinese tourists, was allegedly being used as an illegal drug den.
Officers stormed the premises and shut off the music, putting a stop to the raucous revelry as hundreds of clubgoers were ordered to undergo surprise drug tests.
Police said six people tested positive for meth, ketamine, or ecstasy. Four of them were caught in VIP rooms at the club's mezzanine area, where packets of 'Happy Water' - a cocktail of alcohol and narcotics - were also discovered.
Police Colonel Prasopchok Iampinit, superintendent of Huai Khwang Police Station, said the operation was carried out amid a crack down on drugs in entertainment venues across Thailand.
He said: 'According to the inspection, there were 328 tourists and employees, including 122 Thais and 206 foreigners.
‘We conducted a drug test on everyone and found six individuals with drugs in their systems. They were Chinese and Vietnamese tourists. Four packets of Happy Water were also seized from glass cabinets at the scene.
‘Those who tested positive will be re-tested at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital to verify the results before further processing.
‘As for the club, we found that it had no licence to operate as an entertainment venue or sell alcoholic beverages. The manager was detained, and the club was ordered to close for five years.'
A week earlier, Thai police raided the Skin Pub in Pathum Thani just outside Bangkok, finding more than 380 partygoers inside.
They arrested 173 who tested positive for drugs, along with seven underage patrons. The unlicensed venue's manager was arrested as authorities vowed to crack down on pubs linked to drug use and underage drinking.
