Oggiono, Italy - August 20, 2025 Funeral announcements listing the names of Palestinian child victims were displayed in public spaces in Oggiono and other towns in the Lecco province. The postings included children killed by the Israeli army, such as 4-year-old Razan Abu Zaher and 40-day-old Yousef Mohammed al Safadi. One announcement sarcastically declared the “death of human empathy” alongside a photo of Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini receiving the Italia–Israel award. Activists behind the postings said the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the genocide currently affecting Palestinians and to counter the dehumanization of their victims, whose deaths are often treated as statistics. The announcements were placed alongside regular municipal notices to highlight that these children were human lives, not numbers. Extinction Rebellion stated: “The contested poster denounces the unmistakable complicity of the Italian State, which provides the diplomatic cover necessary for Israel to continue its war crimes and crimes against humanity while maintaining economic and military relations.” They emphasized the poster did not announce the death of Salvini. Regional officials criticized the posters as “violent” or “intimidatory,” while activists maintained they were a factual statement on the consequences of Italy’s arms transfers and diplomatic support for Israel.
