Fascinating timelapse footage shows the process of a tortoise giving birth.

The reptile can be seen wandering around its enclosure, searching for a safe spot to lay her eggs in West Java, Indonesia.

She nudges the soil with her beak and digs in the corner of the room to form a deep cavity using her sharp claws on July 3.

Moments later, after making the hole, she settles in and lays her eggs one by one.

Her cloaca can be seen expanding as she pushes the eggs out, dropping them carefully.

The pet owner even assisted the tortoise using a green ladle to catch the eggs and prevent them from breaking in the sand.

Female tortoises usually lay eggs in soft soil that they dig for a nest. A single clutch can contain anywhere from three to 30 eggs, and some species lay multiple clutches per year. After laying, the eggs are buried and left to incubate for weeks to months, with temperature sometimes determining the hatchlings' sex.
