Drunk Brazilian tourist sparks chaos climbing massage shop roof in Phuket nightlife spot
A Brazilian tourist sparked chaos on Thai island Phuket when he clambered onto the roof of a massage shop in Phuket.
The holidaymaker, named only as Matthias, climbed the roof of the Sunshine massage parlour in the Patong nightlife sport while claiming that 'people were trying to kill him'.
Shocked locals called police at around 2:45 am local time on August 23, and officers arrived to find Matthias in an agitated state, perched above the street.
Footage shows him gesturing from a height as police surrounded him below. Officers later managed to talk him down as worried onlookers erupted into applause.
He was heard saying 'help me please' while being cuffed and hauled into an ambulance to Patong Hospital.
Lieutenant Colonel Chittawan Phengkaew from the Patong district station, said: 'The tourist is from Brazil, named Matthias, though I'm not sure of his age. He probably climbed up because he was intoxicated, but it's unlikely he was high on marijuana as there was no smell. He may have been under the influence of magic mushrooms. He has been taken to Patong Hospital.'
But once at the hospital, the tourist allegedly flew into another rage, breaking free from restraints and forcing nurses to call in police again to subdue him.
He was eventually sedated after being deemed a 'danger' to those around him.
British rescue volunteer Vinnie Modell, seen in the video speaking with the holidaymaker before he was sedated, said: 'The tourist had violently released himself from the restraints on the bed, the room is bare as it's used for patients suffering from mental illness.
‘This all started on Friday evening at Soi Bangla in Patong, where he began to have a mental breakdown and climbed onto a massage shop roof, threatening to jump.
‘Upon arrival, I found two police officers with batons drawn, four members of the ambulance crew, three porters, and many nurses all standing outside the room, which has no interior handle. I was given a brief and decided to enter the room alone.
‘On Saturday evening, we were called to the police station to assess him. That was when I decided he needed to be taken to the hospital and sedated for his own safety.
‘This video happened several hours later when he broke free from the restraints, and I stepped in to help calmly.
‘I made this decision for his safety, not my own. The police were ready to take him down, rightly, for the safety of everyone there. The room is located on a ward with many other people.
'The handcuffs were more of a distraction to subdue him gently and allow the staff to restrain him.
‘I accepted the risks, and I knew it could have gone horribly wrong, but I felt he deserved it, having already established that he believed people were trying to kill him, the officers entering would have been a catalyst.
‘He was successfully restrained and sedated. Everybody won, no one was hurt.
‘Now you can see behind the scenes of what we do to ensure the safety of everyone. This could have been you, your relatives, or friends.'
Police said Matthias was charged with public drunkenness and disorderly conduct in public.
The once-pristine island of Phuket has been marred by over-tourism as the Thai government implements a visa-free scheme to boost revenue following the barren pandemic years.
The island saw 800,000 foreign visitors last year alone.
However, angry locals claim the push for tourist dollars has attracted crowds of 'low-quality' visitors, including those from Russia, India and Australia.
There are also fears that the island has become an enclave of criminal activity, with police unable to control street fights and more organised ruffians setting up rackets among local businesses.
Phuket officials said they are implementing tighter immigration controls and screening processes amid a wave of drug-related crimes and illegal activities on the island.
