VARIOUS OF GAZA CHILDREN TRYING TO FILL JUGS AND TIN CANS WITH DROPLETS FROM WATER TANKERS GAZA, PALESTINE - AUG. 28, 2025: In Gaza, where heat and water shortages are worsening, children on Thursday, Aug. 28, tried to quench their thirst by collecting droplets from water tankers into empty tin cans.

Israel’s targeting of civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including homes, schools, hospitals, water networks, pipelines, wells, and desalination plants since Oct. 7, 2023, has made access to clean and safe water nearly impossible for Palestinians.

As Israel’s attacks have intensified over the past 20 months, displaced Palestinians living in camps are forced to wait in long lines for hours to access the small amounts of potable water available.

Home to 2.3 million people, Gaza’s per capita water consumption has plummeted from 84.6 liters before Oct. 7 to just “3 to 5 liters” per person.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers 20 liters per person per day the minimum amount required in emergencies, underscoring that the current level reflects a “catastrophic” water crisis in Gaza.
