A shopping centre ceiling collapsed when a pipe burst, causing water to gush across a stall.

Footage captured by Rafael Yap Tamse shows a foul-smelling deluge flooding part of SM City North EDSA in Manila, the Philippines, on September 6.

Water can be seen pouring from a broken overhead panel in front of Katinko, an ointment store, while debris from the ceiling is scattered on the ground.

Mall employees and shoppers covered their noses as they stood nearby, watching the water spread through the area.

Rafael said: 'We were having lunch at Manam Restaurant when the water line suddenly burst. The smell was so bad because it was from the drainage system of the toilet.'

An onlooker recalled noticing a sewer-like odour days before the collapse. Others claimed that some SM branches suffer from weak plumbing systems, leading to frequent leaks.
