A black bear sparked panic among residents as it ran through the streets of a Florida neighbourhood.

Footage shows the animal passing near parked vehicles in a residential area within the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

The furry creature then calmly crossed a wet road, appearing to search for food or shelter.

Authorities urged residents to secure garbage, livestock feed, chicken coops, pet food, compost, and beehives, ideally storing such items in containers or inside secure buildings.

Visitors to public lands were also advised not to leave food unattended, to keep camps clean, and to store attractants such as coolers, cooking gear, pet food, and toiletries in bear-resistant containers, in trees, or locked inside vehicles.

Officials from Gulf Islands National Seashore added: 'Please respect all wildlife closure areas. If you see a bear walking or in a tree, give it space. Always stay at least 100 yards away.

'If you choose to watch the bear, use a spotting scope, binoculars, or telephoto lens to maintain an appropriate distance. Park in designated areas and never block travel lanes.'
