Tanzania sham elections spark mass protests among angry voters
Tanzania's elections sparked mass protests after two main opposition figures were barred from the presidential race.
Footage shows hundreds of furious protesters marching through the streets of Dar es Salaam on October 30.
Reports said Wednesday's vote excluded President Samia Suluhu Hassan's two leading challengers, provoking widespread anger among citizens and human rights groups, who have also condemned a growing clampdown on opposition members.
Authorities imposed an overnight curfew in Dar es Salaam, a city of more than seven million, after government buildings and other structures were set on fire.
Residents reported that police used tear gas to disperse crowds demonstrating in northern cities.
Amnesty International confirmed that two people had died, although campaigners warned that the actual death toll was likely higher.
The unrest in Tanzania reflects a broader trend of public demonstrations seen recently in countries including Nepal, Indonesia, Morocco, the Philippines, and Peru, where citizens have voiced concerns over economic hardship and government accountability.
