KYIV, UKRAINE - SEPT. 20 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “ZELENSKYY’S SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY— Ukraine came under heavy overnight attacks by Russia on Saturday, Sept. 20, with three people killed and dozens injured as missiles and drones struck multiple regions, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy wrote on social media that Russia launched 40 cruise and ballistic missiles and about 580 drones targeting areas including Dnipro and surrounding regions, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy and Kharkiv.

“These types of attacks are not a military necessity but a deliberate strategy by Russia to intimidate civilians and destroy our infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.

He urged allies to strengthen air defenses, increase weapons supplies and expand sanctions against Russia. “Every restriction on Russia means saved lives,” he said, thanking supporters of Ukraine.

Russia launched its “special military operation” in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, claiming it was aimed at protecting people in the eastern region. Since then, millions have been displaced, thousands have lost their homes and hundreds of medical and educational institutions have been destroyed.
