Villagers in southern Thailand celebrates 'Ghost Festival' with wacky parade
Villagers held a wacky parade to celebrate the annual Ghost Festival in southern Thailand.
Footage shows locals in colourful traditional dresses marching through a muddy field for the procession in Phang Nga province, on September 19.
After the opening ceremony, residents showed off their craftsmanship by parading around dozens of 'krajads' - containers filled with offerings to the deceased.
Thamniam Bamrung, Kapong district council chief, said: 'Most karajads are made to resemble a square Thai-style house, a palanquin, or a sedan chair.
'The containers are filled with dried food, traditional sweets, household items, and fruits, which are offered to the temple to dedicate merit to deceased relatives.
'Every year on the 15th day of the waning moon in the tenth month, a 'Krajad' procession is held from the villages to nearby temples. This is a unique and long-standing tradition that has been passed down through generations.'
The official said that the Sat Duan Sip or tenth lunar month festival will run from September 19 to 21, featuring a children's pageant, a singing contest, sweets-making contests, and other cultural performances.
