Families were forced to flee as Typhoon Matmo approached the Philippines earlier today, bringing strong winds to coastal communities.

Footage shows rough sea waves crashing along the shore in Palanan, Isabela, on October 3.

The Philippine Coast Guard and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office personnel assisted in evacuating households from vulnerable areas.

Locally known as Paolo, the storm made landfall in the province at 9 am local time.

State weather bureau PAGASA reported that the typhoon carried maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near its centre, with gusts of up to 215 kph, and wind bands extending to 350 km from the eye. It was moving in a west-northwest direction at 25 kph.

Officials warned of storm surges up to three metres along northern and central Luzon coastal areas.

Matmo is expected to continue on its west-northwest track and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday morning.
