Chaos erupts at Cambodian scam compound as Chinese boss jokes about religion of Pakistani workers
A riot broke out at a Cambodian scam hub as Pakistani workers clashed with Chinese bosses who allegedly joked about their religion.
Footage shows the mob of furious Pakistanis trashing an office in Sihanoukville on Saturday evening.
They smashed up computer monitors and hurled furniture through glass partitions, with some of them heard screaming the religious phrase: 'Allahu Akbar!'
Police later arrived to control the chaos. They detained more than 50 Pakistani nationals and two Chinese bosses for questioning.
In a statement, Preah Sihanouk Deputy Governor Long Dimanche said the uproar was sparked by the Chinese employers commenting about the staff's religion.
He clarified in a statement: 'There was indeed a violent confrontation, but it involved Pakistani workers and Chinese employers, not Indonesian or Indian nationals.'
He added that the damages caused by the violence was being determined.
Cambodia has become a major hub for online scam operations due to weak law enforcement and corruption.
Offices across Sihanoukville, Poipet, and other 'special economic zones' have been transformed into scam centres where thousands of trafficked workers are coerced into running cyber-fraud schemes, usually involving romance scams, fake investments, and cryptocurrency.
